(Part 2)

Experiencing the Power of the Gospel

Lesson 6: Justification by Faith
On the cross, God obtained for the entire human race a salvation that is full and complete. However, the big question is, How can this wonderful salvation be mine? In other words, “What must I do to be saved?” This and the next few studies will answer that question. The good news of the gospel demands a human response if the salvation Christ accomplished for all mankind is to be made effective in us as individuals.

Lesson 7: Baptism into Christ
By being immersed in the waters of baptism, the believer is saying good-bye to the old life of sin, which by faith is surrendered to the cross of Christ. When the believer is raised out of the waters of baptism, this act signifies the resurrection of the believer to a new life in Christ. That is why baptism in the New Testament is always by immersion. This will be the focus of our study.

Lesson 8: The New Birth
In order to be a true Christian, every believer must experience the new birth. Unless you are born from above (of the Spirit), you cannot experience the salvation Christ obtained for you. Being born of the Spirit is referring to our spiritual birth; in this lesson, we will consider the full significance of the new birth, something that is essential to salvation.

Lesson 9: Walking in the Spirit
Christianity is not a modification or an improvement of the sinful life with which we were born. It is receiving by faith and the experience of baptism, the righteous life of Christ, in exchange for our sinful life that was executed on the cross of Christ. The work of now subduing the sinful desires of the flesh and reproducing the holy and righteous life of Christ in believers is the work of the Holy Spirit. This work is the process of sanctification.

Lesson 10: The Two Covenants
The Bible describes two opposite methods of salvation labeling them as the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. The Old Covenant was a contract made between God and the Jews, while the New Covenant is a will, a promise made by God that He would redeem mankind through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. However, when God gave His laws to the Jews and entered into the Old Covenant, He knew they could not keep them. The whole purpose of the Old Covenant, based on man’s promise and performance, was to make them aware that they were sinners in need of a Savior, thus preparing their hearts to accept the New Covenant, God’s promise of salvation in Christ.

Lesson 11: Law and Grace
Closely related to our last study on the two Covenants is the issue between Law and Grace. These two are opposites when it comes to salvation. Yet both have their source in God and therefore do not contradict each other when seen in their respective functions. Grace comes along and saves mankind by meeting all the demands of the law in Christ and then gives the believer power to live a life that is in harmony with the law.

Lesson 12: The Blessed Hope
In our earlier studies, we discovered that God has already obtained salvation, full and complete, for the entire human race in Jesus Christ. However, this salvation that has been received by every believer through faith in Christ is not experienced by Christians all at once but in three stages. That is why when asked, “Are you saved?” Christians should respond, “I am saved, I am being saved, and I will be saved.” The Bible refers to this ultimate experience of salvation as “the blessed hope.”
