III. Christians have authority over demons.

The truth is, satan has no power over a believer except what is given to him by the believer.  When you do not understand, or utilize your Christ-given authority, you give up that authority to satan.  On the other hand, satan and his army are fearful of a fully armed, fully equipped, knowledgeable believer who submits to God and stands in the authority of Christ.  This type of believer knows how to overcome and defeat the enemy and send them retreating.  The fully-equipped believer is able to recognize the attacks or schemes of the enemy....Spiritual warfare is part of the christian life.[1]

Luke 10  (v. 19) Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

....Casting Out Demons.  R. Mackin: the Lord has given us power, Sister White, to cast out demons.  Many people are possessed with demons.  I remember a statement you wrote a few years ago that many were possessed with demons as verily as they were in the days of Christ.  When we are in a meeting, and these demons are in a meeting, they may cause people to do queer things.[2]

I noticed in the bible when Jesus was in the temple that demons at once came out. "hold thy peace, and come out of him."  The lord instructs us to lay the people down, lest the demons throw them when they come out.  We found in the beginning that when we begin to rebuke these demons they oftentimes close the eyes of these people....but as we continue to rebuke them, why, the eyes open and they become calm, and the demons-----.[2]

Now it is through the gift of the Spirit that the Lord tells us when the demons are gone, that they are all gone....But our brethren say that they can't be in the last days; but we find that it coincides with just what the Saviour said in the last chapter of Mark, in that great commission: "and these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;" and so on.[2]

Mark 16  (v. 17) And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons....they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

....“Often in the days of His earthly ministry the Saviour met His adversary in human form, when Satan as an unclean spirit took possession of men.  Satan takes possession of the minds of men today.  In my labors in the cause of God, I have again and again met those who have been thus possessed, and in the name of the Lord I have rebuked the evil spirit.”[3]

James 4  (v. 7) Therefore submit to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

....That evening, as I was praying and reaching up by faith to receive the blessing of the Lord, [two men] began to groan and cry out, Amen! Amen! throwing their sympathy and influence in with my prayer.  Bro. White was much distressed, and rising, cried, "I resist this spirit in the name of the Lord."[4]

After this, while I was enjoying freedom in speaking, they again commenced groaning and crying out, Amen! Amen!  I felt no union with them, for their amen's chilled me.  Bro. White feeling their influence upon him again, rose, and in the name of the Lord rebuked the wicked spirit.  They were then so bound as to be unable to rise again that night.”[4]

After the meeting Bro. White said, "Bro. Collier, now I can tell you about those two men; they are acting under a satanic influence, yet attributing all to the Spirit of the Lord."....We have called their influence mesmerism....They rise above us, manifest much feeling, but leave an influence darker than Egypt.[4]

Remember, satan has no authority over any child of God, unless that person gives up that authority to him....When a believer chooses to live in sin and not submit to God, he gives up his Christ-given authority to satan.[5]

Acts 16  (v. 16) Now it happened, as we sent to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us,...(v. 17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." (v. 18)....But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her."  And he came out that very hour.

....As the messengers of the cross went about their work of teaching, a woman possessed of a spirit of divination followed them crying, "These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation....Satan knew that his kingdom was being invaded, and he resorted to this means of opposing the work of God,...[6]

....The words of recommendation uttered by this woman were an injury to the cause of truth, distracting the minds of the people from the teachings of the apostles and bringing disrepute upon the gospel, and by them many were led to believe that the men who spoke with the Spirit and power of God were actuated by the same spirit as this emissary of satan.[6]

Mark 5  (v. 1) Then they came to the other side of the sea,...(v. 2) And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, (v. 3)....and no one could bind him, not even with chains,...

(verse 5) And always, night and day, he was in....the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.  (v. 6) But when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him....(v. 8) For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!"

Brother Daniells, I wrote you a few lines in reference to Brother Davis.  Evil angels are all about him, and at times have control of him in a strange, revolting way....I have the word from the Lord that he is possessed of an evil spirit and "has no power from the snare to go."[7]

His case is like the cases of ancient times....he thinks, speaks, and acts under the influence of satanic agencies....As soon as possible, this demon-tempter's power must be broken....satan must be rebuked as in olden time, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.[7]

Matt 10  (v. 1) And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

That night we were awakened by the screams of our little Edson, who slept in the room above us.  It was about midnight.  Our little boy would cling to Sister Bonfoey, then with both hands fight the air, and then in terror he would cry, "No, no!" and cling closer to us. We knew this was Satan's effort to annoy us, and we knelt in prayer.  My husband rebuked the evil spirit in the name of the Lord, and Edson quietly fell asleep in Sister Bonfoey's arms, and rested well through the night.[8]

Some people claim that Jesus only gave this rebuking power to his 12 disciples; but in the bible, it clearly states that other people "rebuked the enemy" in Jesus name!

Mark 9  (v. 38) Now John answered Him saying, "Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us." (v. 39) But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. (v. 40) For he who is not against us is on our side."

And why is it possible for people to rebuke the enemy?  Because the name of Jesus is above all other names in the known galaxy.

Phil 2  (v. 9) Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, (v. 10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth.... (v. 11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The authority of the name of Christ alone drives out demons.  It is never about us or our own authority, but about the authority that resides in us since we are partakers with Christ.[9]

As you can see from these recorded testimonies, christians really do have authority over any demons which try to harass you or tempt you to sin.
