How Man was Created

What did man become after God breathed into him the breath of life?

Gen 2  (v. 7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul or being.

So, Man became a Living Soul or being!!     Take a look at the chart below:

Body

+

Breath of Life

=

Living Soul

OR

Dust of the ground

+

Spirit from God

=

( Living Being )

What happens when a person dies?

Eccl  12  (v. 1) Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come....(v. 6) Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed,...(v. 7) Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

In other words, when we die, our bodies, made up of the basic minerals of the earth, returns to dust, and our spirits return to God.[1]  Now in the very beginning:  God takes the elements of the earth (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, iron, phosphorous, sodium, etc)....and forms the body.[1]

Adam now has a brain, but he is not yet thinking.  He has a heart in his chest, but it is not yet beating....He is ready to live, but life has not yet entered his body.  But watch!  Now God tenderly bends over him and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life, and a miraculous process occurs which no modern scientist has ever been able to duplicateman becomes a living soul [or being]![1]

Some Examples:

Job 27  (v. 3) All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,...[ KJV ]

Job 27  (v. 3) As long as my breath is in me, And the breath of God in my nostrils,...[ NKJV ]

Here the "spirit of God" is in his nostrils, as referred to his living breath!!

Gen 7  (v. 22) All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land died. [ NKJV ]

Gen 7  (v. 22) All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land died. [ KJV ]

Once again, the "spirit" can also mean the "breath" as referred to being in the nostrils!!

Image #1

( Look at the yellow table chart above )

What is the “Spirit” that returns to God at death?

The Spirit from God  =  the Breath of Life

*****************AND*********************

The Body  =  the Dust of the ground

These words are used interchangeably!!

Man became a living being.  Thus the breath, or the spirit, is life's spark─the spirit, or breath, distinguishes a live   person from a dead one![2]

Jam 2  (v. 26) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead....

See the table chart below for our conclusion:

Body

+

Breath of Life

=

Living Soul

OR

( Dust of the ground )

+

( Spirit from God )

=

( Living Being )

Body

̶

Breath or (spirit)

=

Death ( No Soul )

Acts 5  (v. 5) Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last....(v. 6) And the young men arose and....carried him out, and buried him. [ NKJV ]

Acts 5  (v. 5) And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost....(v. 6) And the young men arose,...and carried him out, and buried him. [ KJV ]

Here we notice that "giving up the ghost" or spirit, means the same as "breathing his last" and can all be used for death.

Which as the table chart (above) shows, means the opposite of "Living Soul" which is No Soul.

Bulb (dead body)..#2

One example that was explained to me years ago, put this all into perspective.

Think of a light bulb as the dead "body" and electricity as the "spirit" giving life to the bulb so that it turns on and lives, which represents the "soul" as a combination of the bulb + electricity.

Now, if you take away the electricity or break the bulb, what happens to the "light" (soul) that was produced?  Does it go back to the power station or does it just cease to exist?

Bulb + Electricity (Living Soul).....#3

This simple concept represents what happens to the "soul" when a person dies; the spirit returns to God, the body goes back to the dust of the earth, and the soul ceases to exist.

One bible commentary passage explains the human “spirit” this way:

Our personal identity is preserved in the resurrection, though not the same particles of matter or material substance as went into the grave.  The wondrous works of God are a mystery to man.  The spirit, the character of man, is returned to God, there to be preserved.  In the resurrection every man will have his own character.  God in His own time will call forth the dead, giving again the breath of life, and bidding the dry bones live.[3]

Image #4
The same form will come forth, but it will be free from disease and every defect.  It lives again bearing the same individuality of features, so that friend will recognize friend.  There is no law of God in nature which shows that God gives back the same identical particles of matter which composed the body before death.  God shall give the righteous dead a body that will please Him.[3]

Isa 26  (v. 19) Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body they shall arise.  Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust....And the earth shall cast out the dead.

On the next page, we will investigate more fully, just what exactly is a Soul?
